RS films are comprised of a prismatic, microlens, or lenticular structure applied to a clear polymer substrate. The structure collimates light in either the vertical, horizontal, or both directions depending on shape. Collimation occurs because the structure only allows light to exit within a specific angle range. Light trying to exit the film at higher angles is trapped via total internal reflection (TIR) and recycled back into the unit for a second chance to exit within the correct angular range. Eventually most light (92%+) exits the film with the total result of a uni- or bi-directional lens shaping the viewing cone.

Prism: often used in flat panel display applications; linear prismatic structure; collimates light in one direction (horizontal or vertical); increases head-on brightness; crossing two sheets of prism film at 90° will collimate light in both the horizontal and vertical directions

Microlens: often used in lighting and flat panel display applications; random rounded structure; collimates light in both directions; increases head-on brightness and reduces glare

Lenticular: often used in lighting applications; linear rounded structure; collimates light in one direction; reduces glare
